Amitabha – the most revered buddha in the Mahayana teaching of the Pure Land, and one of the five wisdom buddhas in the Vajrayana tradition. He is considered a merciful buddha, as he explains the universal law of existence in the Western Paradise and offers protection to all who sincerely pray and ask for his help, regardless of their origin, status, or virtues. At the top of the thangka (from left to right) are depicted Ngawang Gyatso (1617–1682), the 5th Dalai Lama and Lobsang Chökyi Gyaltsen (1570–1662), the 1st Panchen Lama. At the bottom are White Tara and Green Tara. Between the Taras is a sacrificial offering representing the five senses: a musical instrument, a mirror, incense in a conch shell, and a scarf.
