The main image of Buddha Shakyamuni is depicted in the center of the thangka, flanked by his disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Surrounding them are representations of the Thirty-Five Buddhas of Repentance. The practice of honoring them traces back to the text of the Triskandha Sutra. According to the text, a humble prayer addressed to the Buddhas and repentance for committed transgressions leads the believer to purification from them.
