On Demeter’s head is one of her symbols—a kalathos (a round woven basket traditionally used for collecting or storing flowers, fruits, or yarn), which resembles the shape of a lily flower. Tassels from the headdress fall onto her forehead, and her long hair frames her face. The kalathos is associated with fertility, abundance, and the chthonic power of the goddess.
