Yad - literally "hand", a special pointer for reading the Torah with a spearhead in the form of a palm. The yad was intended to prevent the reader from touching the Torah scroll with his hands. Like other objects related to the Torah, yad were often ordered to synagogues by private individuals, and, accordingly, were decorated with gift inscriptions.
